Diesel vs Electric Cherry Pickers
You also need to consider the right power source for your equipment. For outdoor work over extended periods of time, choose to hire diesel boom lifts and cherry pickers. Diesel cherry pickers are the most capable of reaching extreme heights, and offer the power needed for rough terrain and large-scale projects.
For indoor work in sensitive environments, opt for a fully-electric boom lift. These produce zero emissions during operation and run more quietly, making them highly suited for indoor use including warehouses, factories and other enclosed spaces. Modern features like cold-weather operation and enhanced safety features also mean they can be used in all seasons and a range of environments.
We also hire hybrid boom lifts and cherry pickers, combining electric operation with a diesel engine or generator, supporting greater flexibility for indoor and outdoor working or where extended operating times are required.

Cherry Picker FAQs
A cherry picker is a type of boom lift, but the terms are often used interchangeably. Boom lift is the technical industry term for a MEWP with an extending boom and work platform, which include articulated and telescopic versions. Cherry picker is a term often used by the general public to refer to almost any boom lift.
Cherry pickers got their name because the hinged arm resembles the original fruit picking machines. While they can still be used for this specific purpose, more common applications cherry pickers are hired for include building maintenance and repairs, cladding installation, HVAC installation, tree surgery, event staging, lighting and rigging, film and TV production, and facilities management. Telescopic cherry pickers offer maximum working height and outreach, while articulated cherry pickers are most suited for navigating obstacles and challenging sites.
Cherry pickers come in several different types, each with different working height capabilities, safe working loads and outreach. For example, our smallest cherry picker for hire is the Genie Z30/20NRJ boom lift, which has a working height of approximately 10.89m and is ideally suited for indoor applications like internal fitouts due to its compact size. Our super boom lifts, on the other hand, cater to far greater working heights and are perfect for large-scale developments where extreme height and outreach are needed. Our fleet is home to the world’s tallest self-propelled boom lift, the Zoomlion ZT82J, which offers a maximum working height of 82.3m, as well as increased capacity and outreach.
Technically, you do not need an IPAF license to operate a boom lift or cherry picker. However, UK health and safety laws require operators to prove they are fully trained and competent to work at height. An IPAF PAL card is the most widely accepted proof of competence and as such, is mandatory on most commercial sites. Mobile boom lifts will require you to complete Category 3b training, while static boom lifts and van mounted platforms will require you to complete Category 1b training.
