Gaining the confidence and knowledge to know what direction you want to take your studies and career can be a daunting prospect, which is why Caludon Castle School in Coventry reaches out every year to local employers to help support their Year 10 students during their work experience week. This happens at the age of 15, as they are working towards their GCSEs, ahead of their important Year 11 final exams.
Hire Safe Solutions was excited to welcome ZH to join us at our Harbury Head Quarters for a week at the end of the spring term, under the supervision of our Head of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality). ZH undertook a typical induction with our People Team and over the week visited every area of our business, so she could learn more about what they all did and how our business operates on a day-to-day basis.
This included sessions with: our Hire Desk & Fulfillment Team, our People team, our Service department, our Planning & Transport Team, our Damages & Warranties Team, our Finance & Accounts Team and our SHEQ Team. ZH also visited our local sales office at Southam to understand how we interact with our customers, and spent some time with our Operational team, undertaking a reprocessing exercise. This was very helpful to our engineers and will help them save time and become more efficient in finding the correct fleet number stickers for our machines. At the end of the week a full review of learning from the week was undertaken.
We were particularly thrilled to welcome ZH, as there is a well-documented gender in-balance within the construction industry. Whilst women’s participation has grown significantly over the past decade, women still only make up around 4.3% of workers in trade-specific roles, a rise of 160,000 (77.3%) from 2015 to 2024. When including office, administrative, and professional roles like project managers and estimators, this rises to 11.2% of the total construction workforce. Women hold 37% of leadership roles, and 10.5% of construction managers are women. (IWPR.org). We hope that this glimpse of life ‘behind the scenes’ gives her confidence and food for thought as to the variety of career choices available to her. Who knows, she may even consider a career in our industry when she finishes her education!
